My Work

For two decades I worked as a journalist at the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest newspaper, covering government, industry, and the United States as a Washington correspondent. Since moving to Copenhagen in 2015, I have helped Danish and Japanese organizations understand one another — through advisory work, speaking, and writing — drawing on a rare combination of deep reporting experience in Japan and a decade lived inside Danish society.

Advisory & Consulting

Over the years, I have advised a range of Danish and international companies and organizations preparing to engage with Japan — helping them navigate not just the language, but the business culture, expectations, and unwritten rules that shape how things actually work.

Recent engagements have included guiding a Danish company through the distinctive world of Japanese newspapers — from the conventions of typesetting to what Japanese clients truly expect from a partner — and preparing its team ahead of a high level delegation visit from Japan. For an international organization hosting a major summit in Tokyo, I mapped the Japanese media landscape — who to approach, how, and what it takes to earn coverage — ahead of an event.

Speaking

I speak regularly to audiences in both Japan and Denmark — at companies, public institutions, and schools — on work, time, and what each society can learn from the other.

I have, for instance, addressed a seminar at the Royal Danish Embassy in Tokyo on declining birth rates, family policy, and how flexible working culture shapes the choices people make. I have also taught students of architecture, design, and journalism at a historic Danish folk high school, drawing on my career in Japan and the United States.

When a delegation of around 100 Japanese CEOs visited Copenhagen on a week-long study tour across Germany and Denmark, my talk drew the highest participant rating of the entire programme. I spoke on the strength of the Danish economy, how it is built on shorter working hours, and what that means for family life and society as a whole.

Writing and Copywriting

Writing is at the core of what I do. Over two decades as a journalist — including twenty years at the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest newspaper — I have written across government, industry, and international affairs. Today I write regularly for major Japanese media on Denmark, the Nordics, work, and society, with ongoing columns in several leading outlets.

I also take on copywriting. My work has ranged from crafting nuanced Japanese and English copy for one of Japan's largest automotive components manufacturers, in collaboration with Scandinavia's leading design and brand agency, to writing for the Nordic pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka.
